Try making this girly, fancy twist on the regular cinnamon swirl, with these cinnamon swirl bows! These are perfect to make for a girl baby shower, if you are looking for sleepover or slumber party snacks or party foods ideas, or are just right for a bow themed girl's birthday party. They are super fast and easy to make too, and can be ready to ice in around 20 mins.
Fast and easy, these make great last minute party food or party desserts ideas to impress guests of all ages - plus could be the cutest thing to make with your little helpers. The novelty of them makes them so much fun to make and eat - they are a super cute multisensory treat to enjoy!
For this recipe you will need a couple of mixing bowls, a sheet of ready to use rolled puff pastry, ingredients for your go to cinnamon swirl filling (you could even experiment with a nutella or strawberry filling as a fun alternative twist!) and some ready to use pipeable buttercream or cream cheese frosting in any colour/s.
For our cinnamon swirl filling, we used
1tsp ground cinnamon
55g brown sugar
2 tbsp caster sugar
40g melted butter
a sprinkle of chocolate chunks
to produce our big, jumbo cinnamon swirl bows. We also experimented with a vegan version of this recipe, containing applesauce instead of butter, and the swirls came out half the size - but both look great and work well!
Pop the oven on and preheat to around 160c or 320 F, or follow the instructions for your ready made pastry - then whip up your go-to cinnamon roll or cinnamon swirl filling and prepare your pastry, just as if you were making regular cinnamon swirls. Ready rolled pastry is great to use if you are short on time and need to whip these up fast for your party or event!
Spread the cinnamon swirl filling over the pastry, just like how you would when making regular cinnamon swirls. If you can, leave a little in the bowl to be used when forming the bow shapes.
Then roll the pastry up from left to right until you have a long pastry log, then slice into quite slim sections, with each one measuring around 3cm or so.
Now take each section at a time and unravel one layer of the cinnamon roll, so that it has a long tail.
Then put them in pairs, aligning them back to back, tail to tail. We also used a little leftover filling to stick the heads together, to cement the formation and help keep them intact.
Next we criss crossed the tails, overlaying the tail of the swirl on the right over the top of the swirl on the left. Once you are happy, press the layers together gently and firmly, to seal them together. You could experiment with entwining the pastry tails in different ways to achieve your most desired result.
Then create a nice little pastry curl for each bow strand or 'tail', to make them curl like ribbons! This will make them look more naturally like bows and also make them easier to decorate later on.
Repeat this process with all of the slices, so that all are paired up and part of their own bow formation. If you have a leftover slice you could make this a regular cinnamon swirl and use it to later feed your helpers yourself while you wait for these to cool for frosting.
Lightly grease a tray or use foil to coat an oven tray, then pop two of them at a time on a regular sized baking tray, or three on a larger sized baking tray, spaced far apart. This is as, depending on their filling, they may double or triple in size! To bake, lower the oven to about 150c-160c and set a timer for 12 minutes - ours needed a couple extra minutes more - or abide by the regular instructions for your puff pastry recipe.
While they are baking, whip up or ready your frosting in your desired colour - or even make batches in different colours! Buttercream or cream cheese frosting will work perfectly here.
Keep checking on your bows - they will be ready when nice and golden but may need a careful eye! When baked, leave them to cool on their tray for about 5-10mins, then carefully use a spatula or similar tool to ease each one from the tray and place it on a cooling plate, rack or similar. Be sure to carefully support the area where the two swirls are joined - like carefully supporting a baby's head/neck! Then allow them to cool as much as possible, so that they will be nice and ready to ice.
Using icing/frosting of a pipeable consistency, carefully ice out each section of the bow - we decided to outline ours twice so that it covered more surface area over the bow and looked super striking! We then finished the bows with a light sprinkling of edible silver glitter stars, making them party ready.
We hope you love and enjoy!
